A loft in a converted 1900s factory three blocks from the East River, with brick walls, a wall of windows, a bedroom behind a glass partition and a kitchen along one wall. The shared roof deck has the Manhattan skyline from the Williamsburg Bridge to Midtown. Bedford Avenue's shops and restaurants are around the corner, the ferry and the waterfront park five minutes, the L train three. Smorgasburg is on Saturdays in summer, right down the street. The loft sleeps 3 across 1 bedroom (bedroom 1: 1 queen bed; living room: 1 sofa bed), with 1 bathroom. There is a washer and dryer, a dishwasher, a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. Expect proper heating, thick duvets and a drying rack by the door. Check-in is from 4 pm with a smart lock; checkout is by 11 am. There is no parking at the door; we don't recommend bringing a car. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Bed-Stuy has some of the finest brownstone blocks in New York, stoops included, and a real neighbourhood life: block parties in summer, a bakery on the corner, Herbert Von King park two blocks away. Williamsburg's bars and Fort Greene's restaurants are both 15 minutes by bike or train.

I grow flowers and vegetables on twelve acres outside Hudson and keep two Brooklyn brownstone floors from my previous life as an editor. The farm places get eggs and whatever is in season; the Brooklyn ones get a very good bagel recommendation. Ten years hosting, still love it.

Williamsburg is the right part of Brooklyn to stay in, and this is the right house in it. The wifi held up for a week of video calls. Hannah told us about Fort Greene's Saturday farmers' market and the Brooklyn Museum; both were excellent. The wifi dropped once or twice, nothing serious.

We came for an anniversary and could not have picked better. Our favourite thing was the Manhattan skyline from the roof deck. The view is even better than the photos. Go.

What a loft. The photos are accurate; if anything it is nicer in person. Fort Greene's Saturday farmers' market, as recommended, was a highlight. Book it.

Easy self check-in, clear directions, no surprises. Good speakers and good books. We stayed in more than we planned. Parking is tricky, as the listing warns; plan for it. Hannah's tips were spot on, especially Fort Greene's Saturday farmers' market. Would stay again.
