The ground floor of a 1700s canal house, reached through a passage and a courtyard nobody else knows about, opening onto a small walled garden at the back. One bedroom, a living room with a wood floor and plants, a kitchen along one wall and a shower room with underfloor heating. It is the quietest place I know in the centre of Amsterdam. The Noordermarkt (organic market on Saturday) is two minutes away; the Westerkerk bells are the only sound at night. Two bikes stand in the passage for guests. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, room for 2. Bedroom 1: 1 queen bed. There is a washing machine and a proper desk, and fast wifi throughout. Check-in is from 3 pm with a lockbox by the door; checkout is by 11 am. There is no parking at the door; we don't recommend bringing a car. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

The Jordaan is the Amsterdam of the postcards: narrow canals, hofjes (hidden courtyards), brown cafés, and the Saturday market on Lindengracht. It is quieter than the centre at night and five minutes by foot from Anne Frank House and the Nine Streets.

I build and repair wooden boats on the Prinsengracht, and I live on one. The houseboat I rent out was my first restoration project and is still the one I am proudest of. I am around the yard most days, so help is never far away.

This apartment understands what a visit to Amsterdam should feel like. The view is even better than the photos. We loved Café 't Smalle and Anne Frank House, both close by. Special mention for the courtyard garden nobody else knows about. Communication with Pieter was effortless.

Romantic without trying to be. The courtyard garden nobody else knows about: that is what we will remember. Breakfast in the garden every morning. Thank you, Pieter.

Check-in was smooth and the instructions were clear. The bikes made the trip; we barely took a taxi. Spotless, bright and exactly as described. Café 't Smalle, as recommended, was a highlight. Would stay again.

Our second time here and it was even better. Special mention for the courtyard garden nobody else knows about. The kitchen could use a couple more pans. Pieter left a welcome note and a list of favourites that we used every day.

I worked from here for 5 days. The desk and the wifi were up to the job. Don't miss Café 't Smalle; Pieter pointed us there and it was the best thing we did. The bed is extremely comfortable. Would happily do another month.
