A three-storey house in Essaouira's medina, whitewashed and blue-shuttered like its neighbours, with a roof terrace that looks over the ramparts to the Atlantic. Three bedrooms around a light well, a living room with a fireplace for the windy evenings, and a kitchen where the fish from the port, bought that morning, goes straight onto the grill. The beach is three minutes away, the fish market five, the woodworkers' stalls under the Skala two. Kitesurfing, camels and the best grilled sardines in Morocco are all a short walk. Inside: 3 bedrooms sleeping up to 6 (bedroom 1: 1 king bed; bedroom 2: 1 double bed; bedroom 3: 1 double bed, 1 single bed) and 2 bathrooms. There is a washing machine, a proper desk and a fireplace, and fast wifi throughout. Check-in is from 3 pm with our staff, who are at the house every day; checkout is by 11 am. You won't need a car here. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 11 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Essaouira, Marrakech-Safi, Morocco
Essaouira is a whitewashed, blue-shuttered port town on the Atlantic, famous for its wind, its seagulls and its fish market. The medina is small enough to learn in a day; the ramparts face the sea and the beach curves south for miles. Kitesurfers and camel riders share the sand.

I grew up in the medina and trained as a cook in Lyon before coming home to run my family's riad. Breakfast is included at both riads and I cook dinner on request (the tangia takes all day; order it in the morning). My team, Fatima and Hamid, are at the house every day.

Lovely house in a great spot. You wake up to that view. Enough said. Parking is tricky, as the listing warns; plan for it.

I worked from here for 5 days. Fast wifi, a proper chair, good light: everything a laptop week needs. The woodworkers under the Skala, as recommended, was a highlight. The photos are accurate; if anything it is nicer in person. Would happily do another month.

Our second time here and it was even better. Special mention for the wind that gives the town its name. Spotless, bright and exactly as described. Youssef was quick to answer and full of good tips.

We loved every minute here. The wifi held up for a week of video calls. We loved the woodworkers under the Skala and argan oil cooperatives, both close by. Highly recommended.

Three generations under one roof and nobody got on anyone's nerves, which says a lot about the layout. Good speakers and good books. We stayed in more than we planned. Youssef's tips were spot on, especially the woodworkers under the Skala. Youssef met us at the door and had thought of everything.
