A 1920s house on the hill in Santa Teresa, with a terrace and a pool looking across the bay to Sugarloaf, a garden of mango and jackfruit, and three bedrooms with ceiling fans and air conditioning. The living room has a piano and two guitars; the kitchen has a view. The bonde tram stops at the bottom of the lane; the bars of Largo do Guimarães are five minutes away and the Selarón steps ten. Ipanema is 25 minutes by taxi. Daniel looks after the house and will arrange a car for the beach. 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, room for 6. Bedroom 1: 1 king bed; bedroom 2: 1 double bed; bedroom 3: 1 double bed, 1 single bed. There is a washing machine, a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. It stays cool inside even in the hottest months. Check-in is from 3 pm with our staff, who are at the house every day; checkout is by 11 am. There is off-street parking for your car. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 11 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Santa Teresa is the bohemian hill above the centre: a yellow tram, winding streets, ateliers, and views across the bay to Sugarloaf from the bars on Largo do Guimarães. The Selarón steps lead down to Lapa and its Friday night samba. Ipanema is 25 minutes by taxi.

Guitarist, carioca, Santa Teresa resident for twenty years. Both houses have an instrument or two and a view of the bay. I play most Friday nights in Lapa and will tell you which rodas de samba are the real thing. Beach advice is included.

Our second time here and it was even better. Our favourite thing was the view of Sugarloaf from the pool. The view is even better than the photos. Lucas is a wonderful host: present when needed, invisible otherwise.

Easy self check-in, clear directions, no surprises. Sunset from the terrace with a glass of wine was our ritual. Spotless, bright and exactly as described. We loved the Parque das Ruínas view and Ipanema beach at posto 9, both close by. Would stay again.

Three generations under one roof and nobody got on anyone's nerves, which says a lot about the layout. The bed is extremely comfortable. The Parque das Ruínas view, as recommended, was a highlight. Communication with Lucas was effortless.

This house understands what a visit to Rio de Janeiro should feel like. Good desk, fast wifi; I got real work done between outings. The Parque das Ruínas view, as recommended, was a highlight. The view of Sugarloaf from the pool: that is what we will remember.
