A villa of reclaimed teak and ironwood that I built on the edge of the Penestanan rice terraces, with an infinity pool that drops into the paddies and an open-sided living room where the geckos chat at night. Two air-conditioned bedrooms with outdoor bathrooms, a kitchen under the roof, and a garden of frangipani and heliconia. Breakfast is cooked at the villa each morning by Putu. The footpath to Ubud centre runs through the paddies (fifteen minutes); the Campuhan ridge walk starts at the bottom of the lane. A driver and scooters can be arranged at the house. Inside: 2 bedrooms sleeping up to 4 (bedroom 1: 1 queen bed; bedroom 2: 1 double bed) and 2 bathrooms. There is a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. Mornings and evenings are the time to be outside here; the middle of the day is for the shade. Check-in is from 2 pm with our staff, who are at the house every day; checkout is by 11 am. There is no parking at the door; we don't recommend bringing a car. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 7 am, as the neighbours live here all year. We ask for a minimum of 2 nights.

We are in Penestanan, the rice-terrace village west of Ubud centre, reached by a footpath along the paddies. It is where the painters settled in the seventies, and it still has that ease: yoga shalas, warungs serving nasi campur, and the sound of water in the irrigation channels all night. Ubud's market and palace are a 15-minute walk.

I build villas from reclaimed teak and ironwood, and the four I kept are the ones I rent out. My wife Putu runs the housekeeping and makes the best bubur in Penestanan. We are a short walk from each villa and we love showing guests the real Bali, which starts with the morning market.

Travelled as a family of five; plenty of room for everyone. The garden is a real oasis. Wayan's tips were spot on, especially the Tegallalang rice terraces. Wayan left a welcome note and a list of favourites that we used every day.

Honestly one of the best places we have stayed. The bikes made the trip; we barely took a taxi. Wayan told us about the Tegallalang rice terraces and Tirta Empul temple; both were excellent. Highly recommended.
