The third floor of a Victorian furniture warehouse on a street off Columbia Road, converted into one open room with cast-iron columns, brick walls, a wall of windows and a bed on a raised platform at the back. There is a lift, which in a building like this is a small miracle. On Sundays the flower market fills the street below with buckets of peonies and the smell of eucalyptus; the rest of the week it is quiet. Shoreditch High Street and the Overground are five minutes away; Brick Lane, Spitalfields and the City are a short walk. Inside: 1 bedroom sleeping up to 2 (bedroom 1: 1 king bed) and 1 bathroom. There is a washing machine, a proper desk, air conditioning in every room and a lift, and fast wifi throughout. Check-in is from 3 pm with a keypad on the door; checkout is by 11 am. You won't need a car here. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 11 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Hackney's De Beauvoir Town is a conservation area of Victorian terraces and quiet squares, two minutes from the canal towpath and ten from the bars and restaurants of Dalston and Shoreditch. Broadway Market on Saturday and Columbia Road flower market on Sunday are both a pleasant walk.

I restore mid-century furniture in a workshop under the railway arches in Hackney, which explains the chairs. My wife is from Edinburgh and the two Scottish places are hers, really; I just fixed the floors. We have hosted for ten years and still enjoy it.

Honestly one of the best places we have stayed. Good speakers and good books. We stayed in more than we planned. Broadway Market, as recommended, was a highlight. Already planning to come back. Oliver left a welcome note and a list of favourites that we used every day.

I worked from here for 5 days. Fast wifi, a proper chair, good light: everything a laptop week needs. Oliver told us about Broadway Market and the Regent's Canal towpath; both were excellent. The bed is extremely comfortable. The best kind of office.

This loft understands what a visit to London should feel like. The kitchen is properly equipped, which almost never happens. Don't miss Broadway Market; Oliver pointed us there and it was the best thing we did. Some street noise on weekend nights; bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
