The top floor of an 1860s merchant's house in Stone Town, behind one of the carved doors the town is famous for. A Zanzibari four-poster bed, lime-plastered walls, a bathroom with a rain shower, and a rooftop terrace where breakfast arrives with the muezzin and the view of the harbour. Forodhani's night market, the old fort and the ferry to Dar are all five minutes through the lanes. It is a thirty-minute drive to the east coast beaches and an hour to Nungwi, where my other house is. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, room for 2. Bedroom 1: 1 queen bed. There is a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. Mornings and evenings are the time to be outside here; the middle of the day is for the shade. Check-in is from 2 pm with our staff, who are at the house every day; checkout is by 10 am. There is no parking at the door; we don't recommend bringing a car. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 11 pm to 7 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

I run a small dive centre on Nungwi beach and spent ten years in Nairobi before coming home to Zanzibar, which is where the Karen cottage comes from. I can book your Mnemba trip, your spice tour and your dala-dala. Pole pole: nothing here needs to be rushed.
