A fortified tower house built in 1580 and lived in ever since, in the farmland of East Lothian twenty minutes east of Edinburgh. The great hall has a fireplace you can stand in, the bedrooms are up a stone spiral stair, and the walled garden, with its apple trees and a table for ten, catches the sun all afternoon. Four bedrooms sleep eight; the kitchen in the old vaulted cellar has an Aga and a long oak table. The beaches at Gullane and North Berwick are fifteen minutes away, the Lammermuir hills twenty, and the city's festivals and Hogmanay a half-hour train ride. The tower house sleeps 8 across 4 bedrooms (bedroom 1: 1 queen bed; bedroom 2: 1 double bed; bedroom 3: 1 queen bed; bedroom 4: 1 double bed, 1 single bed), with 3 bathrooms. There is a washer and dryer, a dishwasher and a wood stove, and fast wifi throughout. Expect proper heating, thick duvets and a drying rack by the door. Check-in is from 4 pm with me or someone from the family; checkout is by 10 am. Parking is free at the house. Well-behaved pets are welcome (2 at most). Quiet hours are 11 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year. We ask for a minimum of 3 nights.
