A one-room adobe casita at the bottom of our garden in San Felipe, the hillside village above Oaxaca, with a fireplace, a bed under a beamed ceiling, a bathroom tiled in Oaxacan clay and a patio with a hammock facing the Sierra Norte. Breakfast (pan dulce, fruit, hot chocolate) is in the kitchen when you arrive. The village has a small market and the trail up to the San Felipe waterfall; the centre of Oaxaca is 15 minutes by taxi or 40 on foot downhill. Quiet, cool and full of birds. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, room for 2. Bedroom 1: 1 king bed. There is a proper desk, ceiling fans and a fireplace, and fast wifi throughout. Check-in is from 3 pm with a lockbox by the door; checkout is by 11 am. Parking is free at the house. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Jalatlaco is a cobbled barrio of brightly painted houses ten minutes east of the zócalo, with murals, two excellent coffee roasters, and the Santo Domingo church and its gardens a short walk away. The city's great markets, Benito Juárez and 20 de Noviembre, are 15 minutes on foot.

Chef, Roma Norte native, Oaxaca pilgrim. The Mexico City apartments are in the buildings I grew up around; the Oaxaca houses I bought for the mole. Every kitchen is stocked properly, because I can't help it. Ask for my taco map; it is long.

Check-in was smooth and the instructions were clear. The photos are accurate; if anything it is nicer in person. The bed is extremely comfortable. Valentina's tips were spot on, especially the Tlacolula Sunday market. Would stay again.

Five days in Oaxaca and we did not want to leave. The view is even better than the photos. Valentina told us about the Tlacolula Sunday market and the smoke hall at 20 de Noviembre market; both were excellent. Check-in instructions came a bit late in the day for us. We will be back.

This casita understands what a visit to Oaxaca should feel like. The photos are accurate; if anything it is nicer in person. Don't miss the Tlacolula Sunday market; Valentina pointed us there and it was the best thing we did. Breakfast of pan dulce and hot chocolate left in the kitchen: that is what we will remember.

I worked from here for 8 days. The desk and the wifi were up to the job. Valentina's tips were spot on, especially the Tlacolula Sunday market. Firewood was stacked and ready, which we appreciated. Would happily do another month.
