The top floor of a converted boot factory in Collingwood, with red brick walls, steel windows, a bedroom on a mezzanine and a north-facing terrace that catches the sun all day and looks at the city skyline all night. A proper kitchen, a desk with a view, and a car space in the basement. Smith Street's bars and restaurants are around the corner; Fitzroy, the Abbotsford Convent and the Yarra trail are each a ten-minute walk. The 86 tram reaches the city in twelve minutes. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, room for 3. Bedroom 1: 1 queen bed; living room: 1 sofa bed. There is a washing machine, a dishwasher, a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. Check-in is from 3 pm with a keypad on the door; checkout is by 10 am. There is off-street parking for your car. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 7 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

I co-own a roastery in Fitzroy and I am not objective about Melbourne coffee. The Hobart cottage is where I go to not think about coffee. Each place has a grinder, a proper machine and a bag of beans. I am a texter, not a caller; replies are fast.

This loft understands what a visit to Melbourne should feel like. A real coffee machine, properly stocked. Small thing, big difference. A Great Ocean Road day trip, as recommended, was a highlight. Some street noise on weekend nights; bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.

Easy self check-in, clear directions, no surprises. We spent every evening on the terrace. The kitchen is properly equipped, which almost never happens. Priya told us about a Great Ocean Road day trip and the Queen Victoria Market; both were excellent. Would stay again.

Romantic without trying to be. The city skyline from the terrace: that is what we will remember. Good speakers and good books. We stayed in more than we planned. We will be back.
