Romantic without trying to be. Linh's list of where to eat, street by street: that is what we will remember. Good desk, fast wifi; I got real work done between outings. We will be back.

A four-storey tube house on a lane off Hang Bac, in the oldest part of the Old Quarter, with the patterned cement tiles, green shutters and narrow stair of the French years. A bedroom on each floor, a kitchen and living room at street level, and a roof with a table over the lanes. Hoan Kiem lake is five minutes away. I write about Vietnamese food for a living and leave a list of what to eat and where, street by street, in the house. The lane gets noisy around seven when the pho stall opens; this is the sound of Hanoi and worth getting up for. Inside: 2 bedrooms sleeping up to 4 (bedroom 1: 1 king bed; bedroom 2: 1 queen bed) and 2 bathrooms. There is a washing machine, a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. Check-in is from 2 pm with a lockbox by the door; checkout is by 11 am. There is no parking at the door; we don't recommend bringing a car. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 11 pm to 7 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Hanoi, Hanoi, Vietnam
Our lane is in the Old Quarter, off Hang Bac, the old silversmiths' street. It is the Hanoi of your imagination: tube houses, bún chả smoke at lunchtime, motorbikes and a thousand small shops. Hoan Kiem lake is five minutes away and quiet at dawn, when the tai chi groups gather.

I write about Vietnamese food for a living, so my welcome notes are mostly about where to eat. The Hanoi houses are family homes in the Old Quarter; the An Bang house is where we go to escape them. My brother Minh meets guests in Hoi An.

Easy self check-in, clear directions, no surprises. The view is even better than the photos. The kitchen is properly equipped, which almost never happens. The Train Street, as recommended, was a highlight. Would stay again.

Our second time here and it was even better. Linh's list of where to eat, street by street: that is what we will remember. The photos are accurate; if anything it is nicer in person. Linh is a wonderful host: present when needed, invisible otherwise.

Honestly one of the best places we have stayed. Travel cot, high chair and toys were all there; our kids settled in immediately. Linh's tips were spot on, especially the Train Street. We will be back.

Three generations under one roof and nobody got on anyone's nerves, which says a lot about the layout. The bed is extremely comfortable. We loved the Train Street and the Temple of Literature, both close by. The kitchen could use a couple more pans.
