A concrete-and-rattan loft two streets back from Batu Bolong beach, with a rooftop where you can check the swell with your first coffee. A big bed under a fan, a desk with fast fibre for the mornings you have to work, an outdoor shower for the sand, and a kitchen for smoothies. Surfboards and a scooter can be rented on the corner; the beach, the surf schools and the cafés on Jalan Batu Bolong are a four-minute walk. Monthly stays welcome. 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, room for 2. Bedroom 1: 1 queen bed. There is a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. It stays cool inside even in the hottest months. Check-in is from 2 pm with a keypad on the door; checkout is by 11 am. Parking is free at the house. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 11 pm to 7 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Berawa is the calmer end of Canggu: rice fields still separate the villas, the beach is a 5-minute scooter ride, and the cafés on Jalan Pantai Berawa serve the best breakfasts on the island. Surf lessons at Batu Bolong, sunset beers at the beach clubs, and a 40-minute drive to the airport.

I build villas from reclaimed teak and ironwood, and the four I kept are the ones I rent out. My wife Putu runs the housekeeping and makes the best bubur in Penestanan. We are a short walk from each villa and we love showing guests the real Bali, which starts with the morning market.

Batu Bolong is the right part of Canggu to stay in, and this is the right house in it. The air conditioning is strong, which matters here in summer. Romantic without trying to be. Checking the surf from the roof with your coffee: that is what we will remember. The air conditioning is strong, which matters here in summer. Go.

I worked from here for 5 days. Fast wifi, a proper chair, good light: everything a laptop week needs. We loved Batu Bolong beach for surf lessons and the Berawa cafés, both close by. The kitchen is properly equipped, which almost never happens. Would happily do another month.

Very nice loft. Clean, quiet, good location. Some street noise on weekend nights; bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. Recommend!
