Other things to note 🌄 What to Expect & Know Before You Go We’re excited to welcome you to our home by Douglas Lake in beautiful East Tennessee! To ensure you have the best stay possible, here are a few things to know about the area, the property, and the unique experience of staying in a rural home. 🌊 Douglas Lake & TVA Water Levels Seasonal Water Levels: Douglas Lake is managed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Lake levels rise in spring/summer for recreation and drop in fall/winter for flood control. Depending on the season, water access and views may vary. Boating & Fishing: Guests planning to boat, kayak, or fish will need a valid Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) license. Licenses can be purchased online or at local retailers. 🏞 Smoky Mountains & Outdoor Activities The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a short drive away, offering hiking, waterfalls, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing. You will need a parking pass for to park inside the Park. Weather in the mountains can change quickly — pack layers and rain gear. Cell service may be limited in remote park areas; download maps ahead of time. 🏡 Staying at a Rural Property Well Water: Our home runs on well water with a purifier and softener, but there can still be a smell from time to time. Septic System: Please only flush toilet paper. No wipes, feminine products, or other items — to protect the septic system. Wildlife & Insects: Being in a rural area, you may encounter deer, raccoons, snakes, wild turkeys, and occasionally black bears in the region. Insects such as mosquitoes, ants, bees and flies are common. Keeping doors closed and using bug spray when outdoors is recommended. Night Sky: With less city light, evenings are darker — perfect for stargazing but bring a flashlight if walking outside. 🎣 Licensing & Outdoor Recreation Fishing: A TWRA license is required for all anglers age 13+. Options include daily, annual, and out-of-state permits in certain areas. Boating: All boats, including rentals, must comply with TWRA safety regulations. Life jackets are required. Hunting: If visiting in hunting season, proper TWRA hunting licenses and permits are mandatory. Resources: Licenses are available at some local convenience stores, marinas, and sporting goods shops. 🔧 Property Features to Note Well House Maintenance: Our water system uses salt purification. Septic-Friendly Supplies: We provide septic-safe toilet paper and cleaning supplies. TVA & Utility Services: Power outages can occasionally occur during storms in rural areas. Be prepared to stay without power by bringing lights, water and extra food. ✅ Guest Tips for a Smooth Stay Bring bug spray and sunscreen for lake and mountain activities. Secure food and trash — wildlife is curious! Plan ahead for fishing, boating, or hunting licenses. Expect a peaceful, slower pace of life — with incredible lake views, starry nights, and plenty of nature.
