The top floor of an 18th-century house on a lane the trams can't fit into, opened up into one bright room under the old chestnut beams. We kept the original pine floors and the tiled kitchen wall, added a proper bed, a deep sofa and a work table by the window, and left the rest to the light, which pours in from the river side all afternoon. From the small balcony you see a slice of the Tagus between the rooftops and hear the 28 tram grinding up the hill below. It is a third-floor walk-up (sixty-two steps; we counted), which is why it is so quiet and why the view is so good. The loft sleeps 2 across 1 bedroom (bedroom 1: 1 king bed), with 1 bathroom. There is a washing machine, a proper desk and air conditioning in every room, and fast wifi throughout. Check-in is from 3 pm with a lockbox by the door; checkout is by 11 am. You won't need a car here. No pets, please. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 8 am, as the neighbours live here all year.

Alfama is the oldest part of Lisbon: tight lanes, laundry on the balconies, fado drifting out of the tascas after dark. The 28 tram rattles past the bottom of the hill, and the miradouros (viewpoints) at Santa Luzia and Portas do Sol are a five-minute climb. Mornings are quiet; by evening the squares fill with neighbours and visitors.

What a loft. The view is even better than the photos. Inês told us about the pastéis de nata at Manteigaria and the Santa Luzia viewpoint; both were excellent. Parking is tricky, as the listing warns; plan for it. Highly recommended.

This loft understands what a visit to Lisbon should feel like. You wake up to that view. Enough said. We loved the pastéis de nata at Manteigaria and the Santa Luzia viewpoint, both close by. Special mention for the record player and the box of fado records.

Easy self check-in, clear directions, no surprises. A real coffee machine, properly stocked. Small thing, big difference. The photos are accurate; if anything it is nicer in person. Don't miss the pastéis de nata at Manteigaria; Inês pointed us there and it was the best thing we did. Would stay again.
